Who Lies Sleeping?

A blog about the Anthroposaurus sapiens and its kin

Brain to Body Ratio
Is brain to body ratio a better criterion of intelligence than simple brain size?

Could Sauropods have “Farted Themselves to Extinction” (Fox News)?
This research relies on a stack of assumptions and is, at best, a rough model. We don’t know what the gut flora of sauropods was like; therefore, we don’t know whether they farted at all. Brian Switek.

Display, Fighting and Flying
Cowan and Lipps thought birds might have been feathered dinosaurs that used their forelimbs in fighting displays

Late Cretaceous Loss of Diversity in Dinosaurs
Hadrosaurs and ceratopsids, two groups of large bodied, bulk feeding herbivores—animals, like modern cows, that did not feed selectively—may have experienced a decline in biodiversity in the twelve million years before the dinosaurs ultimately went extinct.

160 Million Year Old Fossil Mammal Fills an Evolutionary Gap
The fossil, a new milestone in mammal evolution, is 35 million years earlier than the earliest existing similar fossil. The oldest known eutherian was Eomaia, dated to 125 million years ago.

Before you go, think about this…

By not providing adequate public health care, by acquiescing in an unjust social system, and by withholding resources, babies die unnecessarily. These are typically right-wing policies—moral majority policies. When a premature child’s prognosis is good, and the infant will be loved and cared for, then efforts should be made to save it. The disagreement is when the risk of serious damage and disability is high, and when viable children are subsequently condemned to die by inadequate care and resources. To insist on preserving infant life only to cause suffering before an inevitable early death is hypocrisy, and Christians should know what their God said about that when he lived on earth.

The Wisdom of Carl
Carl Sagan (Demon Haunted World) invites us to accept that he has a dragon in his garage, but only he can see it. He asks what’s the difference between an invisible, incorporeal, floating dragon who spits heatless fire and no dragon at all. If there’s no way to disprove the dragon, no conceivable experiment that would count against it, what does it mean to say it exists? Failure to disprove the dragon does not mean it exists. Claims that cannot be tested, assertions immune to disproof are veridically worthless, whatever value they may have in inspiring us or in exciting our sense of wonder. What I’m asking you to do is to believe, with no evidence, on my say-so. What is he getting at?
